Overview

The Allan Gray Scholarship’s objectives are to broaden the pool of Fellowship applications from those who show entrepreneurial potential and South African (including students in Southern Africa) students with a financial need in. The Scholarship aims to instil passion in the selected Scholars and develop their potential to become self-starting entrepreneurs. The Scholarship covers full high school tuition and boarding fees. In addition, Scholars will receive the following allowances

  • travel subsidy allowance
  • an allowance towards stationery
  • prescribed books allowance
  • an allowance towards toiletries
  • school uniforms allowance
  • civilian clothing allowance
  • pocket money allowance
  • and an allowance towards extra-mural activities
General Selection Criteria

Applicants will be measured as follows:

  • Achievement Excellence: The ongoing pursuit of excellence with tangible and specific focus on setting goals. How are you motivativated to make a difference and leave a mark
  • Intellectual Imagination: Demonstrated by an established record of intellectual achievement; an ability to see the unseen, challenge the status quo and suggest how things could be done differently in sitiations.
  • Courageous Commitment: The courage and dedication to continue, realising that applying consistent commitment has a way of overcoming.
  • Spirit of Significance: A weight of personality that comes from living a life personified by passion, honour and integrity.
  • Personal Initiative: A person who makes things happen and celebrates the satisfaction of bringing new things into light. An Independent, proactive and self-starting individual
Minimum Requirements
  • Applicants must citizens of South Africa
  • Applicants must have a belief in the future of this country
  • Applicants must be ambassadors of the Foundation’s intended profile (refer to opening paragraph above)
  • Applicants must have an intention to study for a degree in Commerce, Science (excluding Medicine), Engineering, Law or Humanities (majoring in Politics, Philosophy, or Economics) degree at WITS, UJ, UCT, NMMU, Rhodes, UWC, Stellenbosch or UP
  • Applicants must achieve level 5 in Pure Mathematics for Grade 11 results
  • Applicants must achieve Level 6 average for Grade 11 results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Applicants must completion of the National Benchmark Test by 31 July 2015
  • Applicants cannot be older than 21 years of age
